—Hahnemann did his provings with Bryonia alba. Some decades later the Austrians employed both Bryonia alba and Bryonia dioica. Bryonia dioica is fundamentally different from Bryonia alba since it is dioecious, male and female flowers being borne on separate individuals. Dioecy prevents self-fertilisation, enforcing the flow of genetic variation. Monoecy does not. Dioecy necessitates out-crossing and outsourcing, in other words change. Unfortunately, in the materia medica their symptoms are lumped together as symptoms of Bryonia alba.

Nature

Elaterium or squirting cucumber is a monoecious or dioecious trailing bushy perennial without tendrils. It is monotypic, meaning it is the only species in its genus, Ecballium
